Hsinchu was known as Zhucheng. Zhucheng means “by the sea” in the Taokas language. Due to its trumpet-shaped terrain, the wind in Hsin Chu is strong (commonly known as the “Nine-fold wind”) therefore Hsinchu has also been referred to as “the Wind City”. Hsinchu Railway Station
It was design by architect named Matsugasaki Tsumunaga in 1913. The building is design with Baraque architectural style and incorporate German Gothic elements. At the same time, Tsumunaga has strengthen the stonework with enhanced the stress-concentrated places such as pillars, corners of the walls, where you can find solemn atmosphere there. This building has become one of the landmark of Hsinchu and listed as one of the national monument in 1987. Fun fact of this station is it’s the only station without the signboard in Taiwan.

Hsinchu City Cheng Huang Temple
Cheng Huang, the god in charge of Yin and Yang, rewards for good and punishment for evil. It has the similar function as our police officer, prosecutor and judge. The big iron abacus hanging in the center of the temple is said to be used by the Cheng Huang to calculate the good and evil in this world. Therefore, the couplets on both sides of the temple entrance advise people that there is no need to be so calculative. There are many people has faith in Cheng Huang, therefore it has become one of the famous temple, many people visit here to pray. You can also find many local food vendors at the surround temple’s main entrance.

Yingxi Gate (East Gate City)
Zhu Qian City started to build in 1827, and the castle wall and three castle doors were demolished in the process of urban street rectification works in 1902. Yingxi Gate is the only surviving tower in Zhu Qian city. It is located about 400 meters from Hsinchu Railway station and is classified as a national monument. The lower ground is a granite arch-shaped entrance, the upper floor is composed of 24 pillars, and the roof was designed in a short crescent shaped.

Hsinchu Fishing Port
Also known as Nanliao Fishing Port, one of the important ports in Taiwan. It’s accessible from the downtown of Hsinchu and is a nice place to visit for the sea breeze and sunset viewing. There are some coastal buildings with waves as the main design concept, the building was built by the beach, it is a nice attraction for tourists to visit and take pictures. The ladder was designed in fish fin scale, it helps a lot by blocking the waves so people can rest by the coast when the ebb tide.

Hsinchu is an excellent place to produce rice noodles because of its windy nature. Both Pork balls and Meatballs are also famous food in Hsinchu. Those restaurants selling these popular foods surrounding the Cheng Huang Temple operate for decades and have been inherited by a few generations. Don’t miss it when you are in town.

Snack stalls surrounding the Cheng Huang Temple were founded during the time the Japanese occupied Taiwan. People started their businesses together from small stalls and now you can see there is various stall there. The Tsing Hua night market is located across the Tsing Hua University and is referred as Supper Street by students here. As the students are the regular customers, the foods here are sell in affordable concepts.
